Jennifer Curtis

What is your name and role at MAMA?

My name is Jennifer (or Jen) and I am one of MAMA's childbirth educators. I'm a registered midwife and also work as a women's health occupational therapist.

What inspired you to work at MAMA?

I’d heard such lovely things about the workplace culture at MAMA, and I think that really speaks to the intentionality behind an organisation. As a midwife, I’m so glad a place like MAMA exists — it allows us to work to our full scope while still being part of a supportive team, and not limited to just the hospital setting.

What are you passionate about at MAMA?

It’s a real privilege to support people during the significant and often vulnerable stages of their lives. I’m passionate about education (both learning and sharing it)! I love understanding the body, the mind, and the why behind things, because when we truly understand something, we feel more empowered to make informed choices that align with our values. When women and families feel empowered, they’re more likely to report positive birth experiences — and that’s what I want for every person I support.

What are your favourite things about your role?

In my work, I try to help people feel more at ease, to share the cognitive load, reduce overwhelm, and create a space that feels calm, kind, and human. I love supporting people to figure out what really matters to them, and what’s not worth the pressure. Learning to be self-compassionate is a powerful tool for feeling more connected and confident as a parent. When someone leaves feeling more grounded and less alone, I feel like I have done my job well.

Where would we find you outside of MAMA?

I’m a bit of a homebody who loves natural light, fresh sheets, and a tidy space. I enjoy listening to podcasts or audiobooks, and appreciate creative arts like music, ballet, and paintings by the likes of John Olsen and Jade Akamarre. I love spending time with good company and when I get the chance, taking walks among redwoods or along our country's stunning coastlines.
