Annie Peters

I'm Annie, I have been a midwife since 2007. My early career was spent in a midwifery led unit in a public hospital where I was supported and mentored by the most amazing midwives, to this day I carry their wisdom, often hearing their voices in my head. For two years I worked in a Midwifery Group Practice program in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne until having my third child made the on-call lifestyle a little harder to manage. Since then I have worked in many roles within the public hospital system and a short stint in government and policy work. In 2024 I returned to Midwifery Group Practice in a leadership role and re-instated a publicly funded home birth program - this has been an incredibly rewarding time in my career as I mentored the next generation of midwives.

What inspired you to become a midwife

After high school I did a Diploma in Children's Services which included a 6 week subject on pregnancy and newborns - I was hooked! I wasn't super keen on becoming a nurse and by chance saw a news article promoting the newly implemented Bachelor of Midwifery, I was pregnant at the time but thought I'll apply and if it's meant to be, I'll get in. I was part of the second cohort of Midwives to graduate from this degree in Victoria.

Your approach/philosophy of care

Midwives have the unique privilege of walking alongside women and families through what is always a transformative experience, no matter how many times they have done it before. My philosophy is fairly simple, your body, your baby, your birth. I am here to provide individualised, evidence-based care that aligns with your intuition and values.

Areas of interest or passion within midwifery

In my early years I was a birth junkie, I couldn't get enough of it and would put my hand up for birth suite every shift. Of course I still love birth, but as I've had more of my own babies and watched so many women transition to motherhood I now really enjoy supporting women in those early days and weeks after birth, getting to know their babies and the new version of themselves.

A few personal touches/hobbies/interests outside of work

I am a mother of 4, and yes this is the first thing I always say about myself -  I value this above everything else in my life. I love to read and listen to podcasts, I watch shows and movies I have already seen several times over, and my car is my own personal karaoke bar. If I'm not at work, or caring for my family, pets and home, you will find me surrounded by my friends, who are almost exclusively midwives!
