Book a Discovery Appointment — MAMA Midwifery Practice

Choosing how and where you give birth is one of the most significant decisions you'll make, and it deserves more than a rushed appointment or an internet rabbit hole.

In your Discovery Appointment, you'll have genuine time with a MAMA midwife to talk honestly about your options: what the evidence shows, how different models of care compare, and what pregnancy, birth and postnatal care with us actually looks like.

We listen to what matters most to you first. Everything we share from there is shaped around that, so you leave with a clear picture of your options and the confidence to make the decision that's right for your family.

What happens in a Discovery Appointment

The conversation follows what's most useful for you, but we'll usually cover:

People come to us at all stages

Newly pregnant and working out where to start
Further along and feeling like something is missing from your current care
Planning a pregnancy and wanting to understand your options early
Curious about home birth, hospital birth, or what continuity of care means in practice
Just have a feeling you want something different, and aren't quite sure what that looks like yet

All are welcome. There are no silly questions.

Understanding your options means understanding the real differences

The 2026 Dahlen et al. study of 3,682 women found private midwifery ranks highest for safety outcomes across all models of maternity care. We're proud that our numbers reflect what becomes possible when women are deeply known, genuinely supported, and trusted in their bodies.

Why families
choose MAMA

Victoria's first & largest

Private midwifery practice, caring for families since 2011.

2,500+ births supported

Across home and hospital settings.

Continuity of care

The same midwife from early pregnancy through to six weeks postnatal; the model the evidence consistently supports.

Trusted across the sector

Our midwives have helped train hospital homebirth programs and sit on Safer Care Victoria committees.

Medicare-eligible

Our endorsed midwives can order tests, prescribe medication, and provide rebates.

Postnatal care that goes the distance

Since moving to an unlimited package model, average postnatal visits have risen from 4 to 10. The barrier was cost; we've removed it.

A note on timing

Our midwives do book out, and the families who get the most from the MAMA model are the ones who start early: more appointments, more time to build the relationship, and more support to prepare.

If you're weighing up a public caseload spot, it's worth knowing that many families are excluded from MGP and public homebirth programs closer to their due date, and that a place with us may not be available if you wait. We'd rather you have that information now than wish you'd known sooner.

Common questions

Good to know before you book

Yes. The appointment is bulk billed, so there's no out-of-pocket cost and no obligation whatsoever.
Both. You can come into our Kensington or Caulfield South clinic, or meet via telehealth from home. Just choose your preference when you book.
Around 40 minutes, enough time to go through your questions properly and give you a real picture of your options.
Not at all. Some people book at 6 weeks, others at 28 weeks, some before they're even pregnant. Whenever you're ready is the right time, though earlier is helpful since midwife spots are limited.
That's exactly what the appointment is for. We'll give you an honest look at all your options, including the public system and private obstetric care, so you can make the decision that's right for your family.
Yes, always. You'll speak with a registered midwife from our team who can answer your questions properly.
If it feels like a good fit, we'll share midwife bios and set up a meet and greet with the midwife who seems right for you. Your first formal midwifery appointment after that is when you officially book your care. There's no commitment before that point.
