Appointment Types
Choosing how and where you give birth is one of the most significant decisions you'll make, and it deserves more than a rushed appointment or an internet rabbit hole.
In your Discovery Appointment, you'll have genuine time with a MAMA midwife to talk honestly about your options: what the evidence shows, how different models of care compare, and what pregnancy, birth and postnatal care with us actually looks like.
We listen to what matters most to you first. Everything we share from there is shaped around that, so you leave with a clear picture of your options and the confidence to make the decision that's right for your family.
What happens in a Discovery Appointment
The conversation follows what's most useful for you, but we'll usually cover:
Your hopes and situation first
We want to hear what you're looking for in your pregnancy, birth and postpartum before anything else. Everything we share from there connects back to what matters to you.
An honest comparison of your care options
We'll walk through continuity of care, the public system, MGP programs, and private obstetric care, including what the research shows about outcomes under each model, so you can weigh them up properly.
Exactly how care at MAMA works across the whole journey
Pregnancy appointments, labour and birth support, postnatal care, home birth, hospital birth; a clear picture of what care with us actually looks like from early pregnancy through to six weeks postnatal.
Your practical questions answered
Costs, Medicare rebates, timing, what happens in an emergency; nothing is off limits.
Next steps only if you're ready
If it feels like a good fit, we'll talk about finding you the right midwife.
People come to us at all stages
All are welcome. There are no silly questions.

Our outcomes
We believe families deserve to make this decision with real information. Here's what our 2025 data shows, compared to national figures.
(vs ~41% nationally)
(vs 4 nationally)
| MAMA 2025 | National average | |
|---|---|---|
| Physiological birth rate | 84.3% | — |
| Overall caesarean rate | ~10% | ~41% |
| Homebirth caesarean rate | 4.8% | — |
| Primary midwife at birth | 90% | 50–55% (MGP) |
| Average postnatal visits | 10 | 4 (fee-per-visit model) |
The 2026 Dahlen et al. study of 3,682 women found private midwifery ranks highest for safety outcomes across all models of maternity care. We're proud that our numbers reflect what becomes possible when women are deeply known, genuinely supported, and trusted in their bodies.
Why families
choose MAMA
Victoria's first & largest
Private midwifery practice, caring for families since 2011.
2,500+ births supported
Across home and hospital settings.
Continuity of care
The same midwife from early pregnancy through to six weeks postnatal; the model the evidence consistently supports.
Trusted across the sector
Our midwives have helped train hospital homebirth programs and sit on Safer Care Victoria committees.
Medicare-eligible
Our endorsed midwives can order tests, prescribe medication, and provide rebates.
Postnatal care that goes the distance
Since moving to an unlimited package model, average postnatal visits have risen from 4 to 10. The barrier was cost; we've removed it.
A note on timing
Our midwives do book out, and the families who get the most from the MAMA model are the ones who start early: more appointments, more time to build the relationship, and more support to prepare.
If you're weighing up a public caseload spot, it's worth knowing that many families are excluded from MGP and public homebirth programs closer to their due date, and that a place with us may not be available if you wait. We'd rather you have that information now than wish you'd known sooner.
