Home Birth in
Melbourne
Birth in the comfort of your own home, held by a team of midwives who have been with you since the beginning. Evidence-based, deeply personal, and fully supported from pregnancy to postpartum.
Birth on your own terms
For most low-risk pregnancies, home birth with professional midwifery support is a safe, evidence-based choice. Here's what it offers that no hospital can.
Your known midwife, the whole time
The same midwife who has cared for you throughout pregnancy attends your birth. No strangers, no shift changes at the worst moment.
Your environment, your choices
Your own bed, your own bathroom, your own music. A familiar space lets your body do what it already knows how to do.
Lower intervention rates
Our home birth clients have a 7% caesarean rate, compared to 35-65% statewide. Evidence consistently shows lower rates of induction, medical pain relief, and instrumental birth.
Professional safety, always
Your midwife carries clinical monitoring equipment and emergency supplies. Clear hospital transfer pathways are in place from day one.
Better breastfeeding outcomes
Nearly 100% of MAMA clients are breastfeeding at six weeks postpartum, with over 95% exclusively breastfeeding at eight weeks.
Postnatal care at home
Four home visits after birth, breastfeeding support, and up to eight weeks of postnatal care. Your midwife doesn't leave after the birth.

Yes, for most low-risk pregnancies. Research from Australian and international health bodies consistently shows that planned home birth with a qualified midwife produces comparable safety outcomes to hospital birth for carefully screened women, with lower rates of intervention and higher maternal satisfaction.
Safety comes from professional support, not from location. Your MAMA midwife monitors you and your baby throughout labour, carries emergency equipment and medications, and has clear hospital transfer pathways in place. Our 7% caesarean rate speaks for itself.
Home birth is generally suitable for healthy, uncomplicated, singleton pregnancies. Eligibility includes things like a head-down baby near term, no significant medical conditions requiring specialist care, and being within a reasonable distance of hospital transfer.
Every pregnancy is assessed individually. If your situation is more complex, we'll talk through your options honestly and help you find the care model that's right for you.
Transfer is part of home birth safety planning, not a failure. Many transfers are precautionary and planned well in advance. If transfer is recommended, your MAMA midwife stays by your side, advocates for you, shares clinical information with hospital staff, and provides continuity through the transition.
Having clear, practised transfer pathways is exactly what makes home birth safe. You will never be alone in that process.
Not much. Your midwife brings all clinical equipment, monitoring tools, sterile supplies, and emergency medications. For your side, you'll want comfortable spaces for labour (a birth pool is optional but popular), towels, snacks, hydration, and the basics for newborn care.
We provide a full preparation guide so you feel ready without overcomplicating it.
Our home birth package includes all pregnancy care, birth support with two midwives, four postnatal home visits, up to eight weeks of breastfeeding and newborn support, and 24/7 access to your care team throughout.
Pricing is transparent and discussed at your Discovery Appointment. Some families can access private health rebates. We're happy to walk you through costs and what's included before you commit to anything.
